Women's Intergenerational Group (WIG)

The Women’s Intergenerational Group (WIG) provides a safe space to explore topics of contemporary interest. We meet monthly, usually on Sunday after worship over a potluck lunch, to explore subjects that frequently lead to further reflection and action. Check the "What's Happening" listings to find out about our next meeting and topic.

Hurrah! Over 300 Valentines and 7 bags of goodies were created, packaged and delivered to chase away mid-winter blues. 131 Valentines were delivered to Villagia in the Glebe and added to Valentine gift bags for the residents. Valentines were mailed to people on George’s list. Lots of Valentines for women and children plus 7 bags of goodies went to Interval House. Over 120 Valentines were delivered to Minwaashin Lodge, Cornerstone and the Elizabeth Fry Society. Reports have come in from women who were pleased to receive the Valentines, and others who had fun making them.

WIG has become a way to come together in community, to share a meal, but also to explore the interfaces of faith and the world. Any member can propose and facilitate a conversation. Here are some examples of ideas we have explored over the last couple of years:
  • Our experience of Lent or "How Advent Moved our Spirits".
  • The work of Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign (Stephen Lewis Foundation)
  • The provocative film “Who Needs Church?
  • Female experience in traditionally male work places
  • Reflections from the 2019 Reimagine Conference (Reimagining Church in Canada).
  • Glebe-St.James is an Affirming congregation: what does this mean in 2020? How are we living our commitment to fully include people of all gender identities and sexual orientations in our life and work?  Check out the meeting notes (with ideas of what we can do next) here
  • The new Canada Food Guide and implications for healthy eating (ours and people who use food banks/ experience food scarcity).
  • Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), considering, for instance the experiences of Gloria Taylor
We've started a few initiatives, that are reappearing on an annual basis:
  • It's becoming a tradition to pair up as Lenten Buddies. Buddies intentionally meet over coffee, tea, lunch, etc. to take time to get to know each other better throughout the passage of Lent.
  • In the photos above you can see our second annual December meeting, to package Christmas stockings for Centre 507’s participants. It's become a favorite event!
