Glebe-St.James is a congregation of the United Church of Canada, part of the wider life and work of the church.
We share Summer and Lenten Holy Week services with ecumenical congregations in and around the Glebe. The links below take you to their websites.
We share community space with the following groups and organizations.

The United Church of Canada

If you’re interested in more detail about the theology of the wider United Church, you can turn to their welcome page for a wealth of information. For instance, it is interesting to read the evolution of faith statements taken on by the United Church:
  • The Twenty Articles of Doctrine (1925) that formed the initial basis of union for the Presbyterian, Methodist & Congregational churches
  • The Statement of Faith (1940) that embroidered the denomination doctrine
  • The New Creed (1968), that was designed to be a succinct affirmation of faith
  • The most recent Song of Faith (2006), which seeks to provide a verbal picture of what The United Church of Canada understands its faith to be in its current historical, political, social, and theological context at the beginning of the 21st century.

Alternatively, if you seek connection to concrete social justice action, the “Act Now” and “Justice Initiatives” branches of the United Church provide resources about how to get involved, what to pay attention to, or possibly where you may wish to donate.

United Church Resources:
As of January 1, 2019, The United Church of Canada adopted a three-council structure:
  1. Communities of Faith (Glebe-St. James)
  2. Regional Councils (Eastern Ontario Outaouais Regional Council)
  3. A Denominational Council (still familiarly called the “General Council”).
This photograph was taken at Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre during the inaugural meeting of the EOORC, June 7-9, 2019. It features GSJ's Rev Teresa as a member of the worship band!

Eastern Ontario Outaouais Regional Council

Glebe-St. James represents one of the urban churches in the geographically wide reaching Eastern Ontario Outaouais Regional Council (EOORC). The EOORC website provides a rich lens into the unfolding life and work of the broader United Church. Their newsletters, calendar of events, and other content can keep us up-to-date on the goings on. GStJ is faithfully represented on the EOOR council by our ordained ministers and two lay members of our congregation.

Affirm United

Glebe-St. James is proud to be an Affirming Ministry - that is a congregation that joins Affirm United/ S’affirmer Ensemble in working for the full inclusion of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the United Church of Canada and in society.

After joining on June 3, 2012, Glebe St. James was thrilled to host the 2016 Affirm United annual conference.

As said on Affirm United's site: "We draw strength and hope from biblical stories of liberation; from the prophetic call to live justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with God; and from Jesus’ witness to God’s inclusive love.
We’re a voice and a support for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and we help ministries become truly welcoming safer sacred spaces through our Affirming ministries program."

Individual congregants at Glebe-St. James are also members of Affirm United, as membership and participation are open to people of all gender and sexual identities.

Mission & Service Fund

Each week Glebe-St. James congregants make donations not only to our local church, but to the Mission & Service (M&S) Fund of the United Church of Canada. M&S is The United Church of Canada’s main fund for mission and ministry. M&S donations support congregations and new church development, Canadian outreach programs, international relief and development, training and supporting ministers, and maintaining ecumenical relationships. Our contributions will help support ministries and programs in Canada and around the world, such as:
  • Global and Canadian justice initiatives
  • Aboriginal ministries and right relations
  • Community ministries
  • Theological education
  • Faith formation – youth, camping, intercultural engagement
  • Support to remote ministries
  • Innovation in communities of Faith
All this and so much more—through your generous gifts for Mission & Service.
